Annual Report: November 2010

CRSS Chairman 'It's been a good year!'

At the AGM on 11 November, the Society's Chairman, John Hodgkinson, in his annual report spoke of the steps forward made in 2010 after a comparatively slow year in 2009 .....

The Community Payback Unit's work in creating an outside display area and pathways has been a particularly successful project and their digging of a long trench from the road to the signal box has enabled a water supply to be installed.

A generous free loan of and erecting of scaffolding by Paul Rix enabled a temporary ramp to be erected on to the loading dock and this was later translated on to the permanent way hut when the re-roofing commenced.

The near-completion of the project to bring the permanent way hut back into use has been another mile-stone during the year and work will soon begin to fit this out as an area for the display of photographs and artefacts.

In giving his report, John spoke of the valuable contribution Keith Crane and Matt Newman had made to this project although those listening were aware that John himself had also put in many hours of work in the renovation of this building.

Inside the signal box, re-painting of the frame's levers in their correct colours has been accomplished. In the process, members of the working party have worked out how the locking works and have learnt the sequence needed to be followed when reversing levers in the frame! This learning has been aided by the provision of a print-out of the original box diagram from the early 1960s.

One-major factor in being.able to progress the work of renovation in 20l0 has been a grant towards the work from the Railway Heritage Trust. For this, the Society is very grateful.
